Jester King | Blackberry Farm Brewery/Jester King Brewery
Objective:
In collaboration with Jester King Brewery and Yakima Chief Hops, Blackberry Farm Brewery created a Mixed Culture Brett Saison for a local beer expo. This beer was only for internal release, thus more design liberties could be taken.
Concept:
It was important to both breweries involved that they be represented equally. Luckily for me, Jester King and Blackberry Farm both use heavy goat and sheep imagery in their brands, so the use of these was a no-brainer.
Concept One
Initial ideas for this label leaned heavily on Jester King and Blackberry Farm’s convenient use of goat and sheep imagery respectively. Therefore this first label concept was created to reference the literal “mash up” between the two brands. The colors? Those were just for fun.
Rejected for being “too violent.”
Concept Two
After a suggestion that the illustration resemble a family crest, this rougher verson was created to show what that might look like. We were on the right track, but not quite there.
Rejected for “looking like a two-headed beast.”
The Final Saison
After many hours of drawing and editing, we ended up with a celebration of our two “families” and a crest just for us. The colors were muted slightly so as to not burn retinas, and the illustration was complicated drastically to give the viewer more to look at. I spent more time actually executing this label than any other one so far, but I think it was well worth the time.
