Short Skirt/Long Jacket | Album Cover
Objective:
Our class was assigned an album cover for any band we choose. The album only had to be a promotional piece for an event we also choose.
Concept:
The collaged design of this album is meant to represent the large variety of musical influences used by Cake including: rock, hip hop, jazz, mariachi, and Iranian folk music to name a few. The whole album has a very muted color scheme which serves as a visual representation of the singer’s monotone vocals.
Planning and Collaging
Since the song “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” is about a woman rebranding herself, I thought a wedding would be an appropriate setting for the collages. The photos were ripped out of “The Knot” magazine, then painted on to maintain a handmade quality.
The Final Cover
The painting on its own wasn’t enough. We matted the painting and hung it to make it seem like the photo could have been taken in someone’s home. We experimented with different lighting/shadows until Cayman was happy with the below, which you can now find on Spotify.
